I thought of him yesterday. A local paper had an article about how a battlecruiser had become stuck on some reef.
An anonymous person posted the following comment:
"They grounded the warship they walked on?"
I think JEO would have approved!!

I am so sad to hear that JEO has died - he was a large part of my teenage years. I was (and still am) obsessed with music and Disc was my favourite fix of the week, always turning to the back page first to see if JEO had published my submissions - he often did. I had a great collection of plastic dinosaurs after he used my captions for his 'Loneliness is...' cartoons. After he printed my stuff for the tenth time, he sent me a wonderful lettter - he lived in my home town, proclaiming his house was 'close to the Heath and not far from the Wilson..'. I kept all his letters but my mother threw them out after an over-zealous spring cleaning session shortly before I married and moved out.

Years later I came across him again, the magazine having been long out of print. His parents extended their house and found a bronze age hoard of axes - I was an archaeologist and my team excavated the find.

I miss him and his humour......

There was one strip that stuck in my mind. In it he was retelling the origins of proverbs and one of them was about an african chieftan in a mud hut who had developed a liking for collecting royal seating places.

Eventually the bottom floor of his hut was full of these immaculate objects, but it still wasn't enough. One day he came upon this fine specimen and dragged it back to his hut.

Finding no room on the ground floor, he got a group of people to lug it up the stairs for him whilst he sat on one of other seats.

This proved to be a fatal mistake as the weight of the chair led it to fall through the ceiling, crushing him to death.

The Proverb? "People in grass houses shouldn't stow thrones."

I haven't seen that strip for 30 years, yet it is still with me. A great testimony to a great cartoonist.

Peter,
I have emailed a link of this website to Jay Lynch as I think the American Underground guys would appreciate JEO's take on the world. It is very similar to theirs in many ways and seems rooted in the same influences.

I do think there should be an anthology published. Have you thought of contacting people like Fantagraphics etc.

This material has had me laughing out loud as it did when I was 10. Even more now I get the references.

Like most of the others here. I am sorry to learn that he has gone. His was the very first taste of Underground cartoon humour I had come across. I was only about 9 or 10 but they made me laugh really hard.
Seeing these character after so many years has bought back many memories. Thank you J.E Oliver!!

I worked with Jack at the GLC in vehicle registration during the 60's. He was a very special person and when I was new he was my immediate boss and made me feel very welcome. He came to my wedding in 1970 on his 'pop pop' bike and wearing his cape. I still have the invitation reply that he drew for me. An original JEO!
When he was a kid he used to write and draw a magazine called 'puxim' He would bring them into work for me to read. I havent seen him for years and was so very sad to learn he had died.

Lamenting the days of the two million and two year old dinosaur I thought - "perhaps this cute character that was part of the Record Mirror now appears on the internet?" So, after a rather sprightly tapping session on the keyboard, the world wide web would reveal its treasure!

I was thrilled that Fresco was alive and well but ... alas ... my joy turned to sadness when I learned that the same is not true of his creator - whom is now, no doubt, doing strips for 'his' creator!

I would like to thank JEO for bringing us, what is, to my mind, the best cartoon strip ever!

Thank you.

Ps. The author of this web site deserves a pat on the back too.....I recommend a roll in the long grass at Farmer Bell's! (no seriously - thank you) :D :D

I just popped by to see what JEO was up to, and was really saddened to learn he's passed away. He made my childhood a slightly weirder and sillier place, and I'll continue to look out for hidden Warthogs and boxes with handles on wherever I go...typical that it's a Tuesday when I learn of his passing - he was so right that they should be abolished!
Best wishes and much gratitude to you, Jack.

Great site! I met Jack many many years ago when I was a very young aspiring cartoonist and illustrator. I enjoyed his work in Disc and I remember writing to him (and getting a badge!). I finally met him at a London Comic Mart and he was friendly and encouraging and even offered to contribute some work to my fanzine. I'm saddened to hear he's no longer with us, but heartened that this site exists.
