I'm 38 Years Old and still reading old comics from my youth, after seeing a few of Jack's old work in other comics such as Buster, i was suprised to see him start appearing in Whizzer and Chips, with the Whizz-Kids Vs Chip-ite section..

Even now i find myself making sure i find the crank handled square, the worm, the 'episode' number, the word acme and JEO, with especially the 'Abolish Tuesday' .. For some reason i always remember that from my childhood, even remember wishing at school they would abolish tuesdays so we only had to go for four days a week..

Only today when browsing wikipedia did i realise he had died, and i was so sad to hear it, somehow, i don't think reading my old comics and coming across JEO creations will seem the same now..

RIP Jack

Bump!

This talented wordsmith and graphic artist should not be forgotten.

Is there a museum, such as Modern Art or the Tate that would display some of Jack's undoubted prowess with the pen?

I feel a letter coming on...

I was very sad to have just found out that Jack had passed away so long ago. I had lost touch with him for many years now and I will always remember in the 1970's, when we used to go drinking together with a group of friends, he produced cartoons of the 'Grapplepods' as he called them. They were great characters but I am not sure whether they were ever published anywhere.
Fond memories, and Jack will certainly be very sadly missed.

In the seventies I won two warthogs from his column for my small contributions. Only just found my sole remaining warthog in an old suitcase also have a treasured letter from the man himself thanking me for his contribution

I knew Jack many, many years ago when we were children also his brother Fred plus the loving parents living at Stanhill Farm, Birchwood Road. Very sad to read the news and my best wishes go to his widow and brother, we lost contact many years ago.
Rest in peace Jack.

Jack and I were friends at school and I regret that we did not maintain contact after we left. I know that Jack would not object to my recalling him as being REALLY WEIRD, since that is the image he set out to project, with considerable determination.

Something prompted me to wonder 'whatever happened to Jack?'. I'm shocked to discover that I've left it too late to re-establish contact. This is a matter of profound regret, but I'm left with some interesting, if rather bizarre, recollections of the times we spent together.

Jack, your legacy is a particular kind of fun, and that's more than many of us can hope to bequeath.

Chris.

I used to work on the editorial of Buster comic, where Jack drew for us. I wasn't aware he'd died. I remember his visits to the Buster office in the 'eighties, when he'd been at his peak. It was an honour to have known him - I know he came over as a bit eccentric, but it was great to meet the man whom I had known beforehand for his cartoon in 'Disc' in the 'seventies, then strangely as fate would have it, without me knowing, I was to see and work with him later. Amazing! Thanks for what you gave us 'JEO'!

I worked with Jack on leaving school. He was an EO with the then GLC - maining experimenting with his art behind a forest of potted plants.
#One of the first ditties he wrote was;

Ice- cream is cold,
but soup is hot.
I told my mother and she said "What!"

Sorry we lost touch at the end Jack. You'll be much missed.

I have nothing but the fondest memories of buying my copy of "Record Mirror" and immediately going towards the back to read "J. Edward Oliver's Garbage Column", it was sublime and true excellence. R.I.P Mr Oliver
