I knew Jack many, many years ago when we were children also his brother Fred plus the loving parents living at Stanhill Farm, Birchwood Road. Very sad to read the news and my best wishes go to his widow and brother, we lost contact many years ago.
Rest in peace Jack.

Jack and I were friends at school and I regret that we did not maintain contact after we left. I know that Jack would not object to my recalling him as being REALLY WEIRD, since that is the image he set out to project, with considerable determination.

Something prompted me to wonder 'whatever happened to Jack?'. I'm shocked to discover that I've left it too late to re-establish contact. This is a matter of profound regret, but I'm left with some interesting, if rather bizarre, recollections of the times we spent together.

Jack, your legacy is a particular kind of fun, and that's more than many of us can hope to bequeath.

Chris.

I used to work on the editorial of Buster comic, where Jack drew for us. I wasn't aware he'd died. I remember his visits to the Buster office in the 'eighties, when he'd been at his peak. It was an honour to have known him - I know he came over as a bit eccentric, but it was great to meet the man whom I had known beforehand for his cartoon in 'Disc' in the 'seventies, then strangely as fate would have it, without me knowing, I was to see and work with him later. Amazing! Thanks for what you gave us 'JEO'!

I worked with Jack on leaving school. He was an EO with the then GLC - maining experimenting with his art behind a forest of potted plants.
#One of the first ditties he wrote was;

Ice- cream is cold,
but soup is hot.
I told my mother and she said "What!"

Sorry we lost touch at the end Jack. You'll be much missed.

Mo x

I have nothing but the fondest memories of buying my copy of "Record Mirror" and immediately going towards the back to read "J. Edward Oliver's Garbage Column", it was sublime and true excellence. R.I.P Mr Oliver

Sad to hear that JEO is no longer with us, I really enjoyed his clever work and was the main reason I bought Record Mirror long past the time I was too old for it.

I just learned of this site, and the great man's passing. JEO was a huge part of my teenage years; I collected all his Disc and RM strips in scrapbooks religiously, as his anarchic and wacky sense of humour combined with his unique style of drawing really spoke to me in some deep, teenage, way.

I got over my intense shyness by sending him a bundle of jokes, and was astonished and so proud when he replied, along with sending me a coveted plastic warthog (which, until then, I must admit I thought was a joke - I never thought for one moment he actually sent out real plastic warthogs!). I even framed the letter, and the warthog had pride of place in my student digs and on the mantlepiece of my first and second homes.

I guess that my plastic warthog must have been one of the last he sent out, as the RM strip my jokes got illustrated in was either the last or one or two before. I honestly thought it was a joke when he talked about the last vestiges of Disc disappearing, and when it finally dawned on me that RM had dropped his strip, I stopped my subscription and told them so too. The first - and last - time I had ever written to a publication.

Sadly, I lost the scrapbooks years ago; must have been during one of my various house moves; I only discovered this loss in the early 90s when I wanted to scan them onto what would have been my first website.

I thank you so very much for keeping his work alive to the old guard, and trust that his work will find new audiences who will love him as much as we teens of the 70s and 80s did.

From Gibraltar, but it's not an option on the country pulldown! Very sad to hear of the great man's passing. I was so delighted some time back when I found this website (not having heard/seen any of his work since he left Record Mirror shortly after which i stopped buying it) but sad to find out he has now left us. the tears and roars of laughter this man gave a young boy will never be forgotten. This man was an underrated genius who should have been celebrated throughout the country and the world as one of the funniest men of his generation. Bless him.

I feel rather embarassed in writing this but i didn't know Mr. Edwards, I have just retired and decided to collect philart covers. I love the wacky art humour, and still not knowing who the artist was i ended buying a signed cover. Now i feel i own a small part of his life. god bless.
